Privacy Policy
Last updated: 31 August 2026
1. About this Privacy Policy
Romeo & Juliet is built around private conversations and considered introductions. That means people may tell us things they would not ordinarily put on a public dating profile. We take that responsibility seriously.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information Romeo & Juliet collects, why we use it, how it is used in matchmaking, who may receive it, how long we keep it and the rights you have in relation to it.
The Policy applies when you visit Romeo & Juliet, accept or use a referral, create an account, speak or write to Juliet, participate in matchmaking or introductions, attend one of our events, communicate with us or otherwise use our services.
Romeo & Juliet is operated by Romeo & Juliet Ltd., trading as Romeo & Juliet.
Company number: 17456690
Registered office: 128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX
Privacy contact: product@romeojuliet.love
For the purposes of UK data-protection law, the legal entity operating Romeo & Juliet is generally the controller of the personal information described in this Policy.
Our matchmaking and introduction services are for adults aged 18 or over.
2. How Romeo & Juliet works
Romeo & Juliet is a private, referral-led matchmaking and introduction service.
Members may speak or write to Juliet during onboarding. Juliet is designed to understand information that matters to matchmaking, such as relationship intentions, preferences, values, lifestyle and non-negotiables.
Information provided by members can be structured and assessed using rules, computational methods and artificial intelligence. This helps us identify possible introductions.
Technology assists the process, but it does not make the final introduction decision by itself. At launch, a person reviews every proposed introduction before it is shown to members.
3. Information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you use Romeo & Juliet.
When you create or use an account, we may collect your name, email address, telephone number, date of birth, age, general location, authentication information, photographs and information needed to establish your eligibility or verification status.
We may also collect information that you choose to provide for matchmaking. This can include who you would like to meet, relationship intentions, age and geographical preferences, values, family plans, lifestyle, interests, communication preferences, attraction and relationship preferences, religion or faith where you choose to discuss it, and any matters that you regard as non-negotiable.
If you speak to Juliet by voice, we may process the audio of your conversation and create a transcript. If you use Juliet by text, we process what you write. We may then extract structured information from that conversation so that you can review and confirm what Juliet has understood.
As matchmaking takes place, we may generate or record information such as eligibility results, compatibility information, potential match assessments, internal calculations, introduction recommendations and human-review decisions.
If you receive an introduction, we may record whether you accepted or declined it. If you choose to give a reason for declining, that reason may be stored privately. We may also ask whether you met, whether you would like to meet again and, where you choose to participate, other feedback about the experience.
We also collect ordinary technical information needed to operate and protect the service. This can include IP addresses, browser and device information, login data, timestamps, diagnostic records, security information and cookie or similar technology data.
Where we offer paid services, we may receive information about payments and purchases. Full payment-card details will ordinarily be handled by our payment provider rather than stored by Romeo & Juliet.
4. Information you need to provide
Some information is necessary if we are to provide meaningful matchmaking. For example, we need to know that you are an adult and will generally need sufficient information about who you are looking to meet and any hard restrictions that you want us to respect.
Other information is optional. You do not have to tell us everything about yourself, and you should not feel obliged to answer an optional question simply because Juliet asks it.
If you choose not to provide information that is genuinely necessary for a particular matching factor, we may be unable to use that factor. Where important information is missing, we may ask you for clarification or pause matching rather than make assumptions about you.
If we require particular information because of law or because it is necessary to provide a service you have requested, we will make that clear at the point where we ask for it.
5. Referrals and invitations
Romeo & Juliet is designed around referrals or invitations.
Where referral functionality is available, an existing member or approved community partner may create a referral token, code or link. Our preferred approach is that they send the invitation to you directly and you decide whether to use it.
Before you become a member, we may hold limited information connected with an invitation. This may include the identity of the person who created it, the referral token, the context of the referral, timestamps and, where technically necessary, a cryptographic hash associated with intended contact information.
A full referral relationship is created only after the invited person accepts the invitation and creates an account.
We ask people making referrals not to give us sensitive or unnecessary information about another person.
A referral does not amount to consent to receive marketing from Romeo & Juliet.
If we obtain personal information about you from another person in circumstances where UK data-protection law requires us to give you privacy information, we will provide that information within the legally required period. Where we use the information to contact you, that will ordinarily be no later than our first communication with you.
6. Sensitive information
Matchmaking can involve information that UK data-protection law classifies as special category personal data.
Depending on what you choose to tell us, this may include information about racial or ethnic origin, religious or philosophical beliefs, health, sex life or sexual orientation.
We will only process special category personal data where we have both a lawful basis for processing under Article 6 of the UK GDPR and an additional condition that allows the processing under Article 9.
For special category information used in core matchmaking, we generally expect to rely on your explicit consent where that is the appropriate Article 9 condition.
Where we ask for explicit consent, we will explain the relevant use of the information and require an affirmative choice from you. You can withdraw that consent later. Withdrawal does not make processing that took place lawfully before withdrawal unlawful.
Withdrawing consent may mean that we can no longer use the relevant information in matchmaking. If the information is necessary for a particular feature, this may also mean that we cannot continue to provide that feature.
7. What Juliet understands about you
Our systems may use artificial intelligence to extract structured information from your conversation with Juliet.
We do not want an AI system quietly deciding sensitive or important facts about you and then using them as though you had stated them yourself.
For that reason, our launch design requires sensitive or decision-relevant information extracted from a Juliet conversation to be confirmed by the member before it is used in live matching.
You may be given an opportunity to review what Juliet has understood, correct it, reject it or confirm it.
Our systems are instructed not to guess information such as ethnicity, health conditions or sexuality where that information has not been provided.
8. Why we use your information
We use account and identity information to create and administer your account, verify eligibility, communicate with you and protect the service.
We use matchmaking information to understand your preferences, conduct compatibility assessment, identify people who may be suitable for an introduction and explain why an introduction has been suggested.
We use information about referrals to operate a private referral network, administer invitation codes and prevent misuse.
We use technical and security information to protect members and our systems, investigate suspicious activity, maintain the service and diagnose technical problems.
Where we offer paid services, we use transaction information to administer purchases, deal with payments and meet accounting and legal obligations.
We may analyse appropriately minimised information to understand whether Romeo & Juliet is working as intended and to improve the service. Where a use would require separate consent, particularly because it involves sensitive information or research beyond the ordinary operation of matchmaking, we will obtain or establish the appropriate legal basis before carrying it out.
We may also process information where necessary to comply with law or to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
9. Our lawful bases
Where processing is necessary to create or administer your membership and provide matchmaking or introductions that you have requested, we may rely on the performance of our contract with you or steps taken at your request before a contract is entered into.
We rely on legitimate interests where it is appropriate to do so. These interests can include maintaining a safe and reliable service, administering our referral network, preventing fraud and abuse, protecting our systems, understanding how the service performs and protecting our legal rights. Before relying on legitimate interests, we consider whether those interests are outweighed by your rights and reasonable expectations.
Where the law requires consent, we ask for it. This may include explicit consent for particular special category information and consent for certain marketing or optional research activities.
We may also process information where necessary to meet a legal obligation.
We do not use legitimate interests as a substitute where the law requires consent.
10. Matching and profiling
Romeo & Juliet uses both automated processing and human judgement.
Our systems can apply eligibility rules and member-confirmed hard preferences before broader compatibility is assessed. For people who remain eligible for one another, information can be assessed across factors such as relationship intentions, values, life direction, communication or interaction preferences, practical compatibility and lifestyle.
Some of this activity may constitute profiling under data-protection law.
Where there is significant uncertainty or insufficient information, we may ask for clarification or decide not to make an introduction.
Internal matching information is used as a decision-support tool. We do not present an internal percentage or numerical score to members as an objective prediction that a relationship will succeed.
11. Artificial intelligence and human review
Romeo & Juliet uses artificial intelligence for functions that may include transcription, structuring information supplied by members, identifying missing information, assisting compatibility assessment, drafting explanations for introductions, moderation and internal quality checks.
At launch, a proposed introduction is not presented simply because an automated system recommends it. A person reviews every proposed introduction first.
The review can include checking eligibility, unresolved preferences or restrictions, the support for an introduction explanation and relevant quality, safety or fairness considerations.
Romeo & Juliet does not currently use solely automated processing to make decisions about members that produce legal or similarly significant effects.
If that position changes and specific automated-decision safeguards become applicable, we will update this Policy and provide the rights and information required by law.
12. Technology and AI providers
We use third-party technology companies to operate parts of Romeo & Juliet. These may provide voice technology, transcription, artificial-intelligence inference, cloud infrastructure, databases, authentication, communications, analytics, security or verification services.
We aim to give technology providers only the information reasonably necessary for the task they are performing.
Our matching architecture is designed so that direct identifying information is excluded from AI matching requests wherever reasonably possible. Names, email addresses, telephone numbers, exact addresses, identity-verification material and referral notes should not be included in AI matching prompts unless there is a specific and justified reason.
Our launch standard is to use approved commercial provider routes and to disable optional use of member information for a provider's independent model training or product improvement.
Some providers may nevertheless retain request information temporarily for security, service operation or abuse prevention under their commercial terms. We therefore do not promise that every AI request is subject to literal zero retention.
Before a provider is approved to handle sensitive member information, we expect to review its relevant contractual terms, retention arrangements, data use and international-transfer position.
We do not sell personal information to AI providers.
13. What another member sees
A person you are introduced to does not receive everything you have told Romeo & Juliet.
An introduction may contain your first name, photograph, agreed profile information, general location or practical information, and selected information that explains why the introduction has been suggested.
We do not intend to show another member your raw Juliet voice recording, raw transcript, private internal notes, hidden matching calculations, private decline reasons or private post-date debrief.
The same protection applies to information the other person has given us.
Once you choose to disclose additional information directly to another person, that disclosure is generally outside Romeo & Juliet's control.
14. Who inside Romeo & Juliet may see your information
Authorised people working for Romeo & Juliet may access personal information where reasonably necessary to administer membership, review applications, review proposed introductions, handle safety issues, provide support, respond to privacy requests or maintain the service.
Access should be based on role and need.
Reviewers should receive only the information reasonably necessary for the task they are carrying out. Raw transcripts should not be routinely exported for matching review.
Administrative access may be logged for accountability and security.
15. Feedback and learning from introductions
Romeo & Juliet may ask you privately about an introduction or meeting.
We may ask whether you met, whether you felt comfortable or respected, whether you would like another meeting and what you would like Romeo & Juliet to understand for future introductions.
The other person does not receive your private debrief.
We may use appropriately minimised or pseudonymised outcome information to evaluate and improve matching where we have an appropriate lawful basis.
Longer-term relationship follow-up may be optional and may involve separate consent depending on the circumstances.
16. Research and product improvement
We may analyse how Romeo & Juliet performs in order to improve onboarding, matching quality, safety, reliability and usability.
Where reasonably possible, we use aggregated, anonymised, minimised or pseudonymised information.
Agreeing to use Romeo & Juliet for matchmaking does not amount to blanket consent for unrelated research, marketing or third-party AI training.
Sensitive information supplied for matchmaking will not be used for an unrelated research purpose merely because we already possess it.
Where a research or development activity requires another lawful basis or additional consent, we will establish that before the processing takes place.
17. Other organisations that receive information
We may share information with carefully selected organisations where reasonably necessary to operate Romeo & Juliet. These can include hosting and database providers, AI and voice providers, communications providers, security and verification providers, analytics providers, payment providers and professional advisers such as lawyers, accountants and insurers.
We may also disclose information where required or permitted by law, including to courts, regulators and law-enforcement bodies.
If Romeo & Juliet is involved in a genuine investment, financing, reorganisation, acquisition or sale, relevant information may be disclosed to professional advisers and transaction counterparties where reasonably necessary and subject to appropriate protections.
We do not sell your personal information.
18. International transfers
Some companies that help us operate Romeo & Juliet are based outside the United Kingdom or process information internationally. This may include processing in the United States.
Where a transfer of personal information outside the United Kingdom is restricted by data-protection law, we will use an appropriate lawful transfer mechanism. Depending on the provider and destination, this may include UK adequacy regulations, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, the UK Addendum to approved contractual clauses or another permitted safeguard.
Where appropriate, we will consider whether additional technical, contractual or organisational protections are needed.
You can contact product@romeojuliet.love if you would like more information about the safeguards relevant to a particular transfer.
19. How long we keep information
We do not want to keep highly personal matchmaking information indefinitely.
Raw Juliet voice audio is deleted after successful transcription and reasonable quality checking. Under our default policy, it should not be retained for more than seven days. Longer retention would require a specific reason, such as a separate opt-in purpose, a temporary technical or safety issue, or a legal requirement.
Juliet transcripts are ordinarily retained while your membership is active and for up to 30 days after withdrawal or account closure. A transcript may be retained for longer where reasonably necessary for an unresolved safety issue, complaint or legal requirement.
Member-confirmed profile and matching information is ordinarily retained while membership is active and for up to 30 days after account closure, subject to specific records that need to be kept for longer.
Information extracted by automated systems that you reject, replace or do not confirm may be retained for up to 90 days for quality and audit purposes. After that period, it should be deleted or irreversibly aggregated.
Information associated with an invitation that is never accepted should ordinarily be deleted within 30 days after the invitation expires or is revoked. We may retain a minimal record where genuinely necessary to prevent abuse of the referral system.
Records showing that an introduction was proposed, accepted, declined or completed may ordinarily be retained for up to 12 months after the introduction closes. This allows us to deal with safety concerns, complaints, service administration and evaluation of the matchmaking process. After that, information should be deleted or anonymised unless there is a continuing reason to retain it.
Private post-date feedback may ordinarily be retained while your membership remains active and for up to 12 months following the relevant introduction. Where information has longer-term research value, our preference is to anonymise or appropriately pseudonymise it rather than preserve identifiable private comments indefinitely.
Ordinary operational and technical logs are generally retained for no more than 90 days unless a security or fraud investigation justifies a longer period.
We may retain records of privacy notices, consent, withdrawal of consent, objections and privacy requests for up to six years where reasonably necessary.
Event participation
This section applies to Romeo & Juliet events and programmes, including hackathons and campus events, rather than to membership.
If you take part in an event, we collect the details you enter on the event page, such as your name, email address and college, and we record your conversation with Juliet.
Raw event voice audio is deleted after 30 days.
Event conversation transcripts are retained without a fixed end date, so that we can understand who took part and follow up with you about Romeo & Juliet. You can ask us to delete your event data at any time by emailing product@romeojuliet.love, and we will do so.
These sections are still being finalised. The remaining parts of this Privacy Policy, including the full detail of your data-protection rights, how to make a complaint, and how we notify you of changes, are being completed.
In the meantime, for any privacy request, data-deletion request or complaint, contact product@romeojuliet.love and we will respond.
If you are in India, you may also contact us at that address to exercise rights under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. A named grievance officer will be published here once appointed.
