Romeo & Juliet x IIT Madras

An applied machine learning programme and hackathon, followed by a competitive build and evaluation phase. Fully remote, open to students at IITs across India. Synthetic data only.

The central question is simple to state but difficult to solve well: how should a system decide who should be introduced to whom when it does not know everything about the people involved, feedback arrives over time, and each decision changes the options and information available later?

This is not a conventional hackathon where you are handed a dataset on Friday and asked to ship an app by Sunday. The first stage is deliberately research-led: you learn the underlying ideas, decide what you think the right approach is, and test that thinking before you start building.

You will work entirely with synthetic data. You will not be asked for any personal information about your own relationships, and no real Romeo & Juliet member data is placed in the competition environment.

Students from any IIT, any year and any discipline may take part. You do not need to be enrolled in a formal machine learning course, though you should be comfortable with coding, mathematics or another quantitative approach.
